When autumn arrives and the temperature drops, it’s time to think about winter tyres. If you’re preparing for the driving theory test, knowing the rules about tyres and winter driving is an important part of the syllabus.
Many people fail the test because they can’t remember details about tread depth, braking distance and the rules for winter tyres and studded tyres. This guide gives you a simple and practical overview of what you need to know – both for the theory test and for safe winter driving.
When do you need to use winter tyres?
There is no fixed date that says when you must have winter tyres on your car. The rule in Norway is clear: you must use tyres that match the road conditions.
This means you can get a fine if you drive with summer tyres on snow, ice or frost – no matter what time of year it is.
👉 The road conditions, not the calendar, decide when winter tyres are required.
Rules for studded tyres
The dates people often talk about actually apply to studded tyres, not winter tyres in general.
- Southern Norway: Studded tyres are allowed from 1 November to the first Monday after Easter Monday.
- Northern Norway: Studded tyres are allowed from 16 October to 30 April.
You may also use studded tyres outside these dates if the road conditions require it (for example, early snowfall in October).
👉 For the theory test, remember both points:
- Winter tyres must be used when there are winter conditions.
- Studded tyres have their own allowed periods.
Minimum tread depth
Another common theory question is about tread depth:
- Summer tyres: minimum 1.6 mm
- Winter tyres: minimum 3 mm
Even though these are the legal minimums, at least 5 mm is recommended on winter tyres for good grip on slippery roads.
👉 Theory tip: If you see options like 1.6 mm – 3 mm – 5 mm, the correct legal requirement for winter tyres is 3 mm.
Winter tyres and braking distance
Braking distance changes a lot in winter, and this often appears on the test.
- On dry asphalt at 50 km/h: about 25 metres
- On slippery winter roads: 4–10 times longer
Example: At 50 km/h, your stopping distance can be over 200 metres on ice.
This is why speed is the most important safety factor when driving in winter.øver målrettet og effektivt, og bruker tiden på det som faktisk hjelper deg til å bestå.
Studded vs. non-studded winter tyres
You should know the difference:
Studded tyres:
- Best grip on ice
- May require a studded tyre fee in some cities
- Cause more wear on the road surface
Non-studded tyres (friction tyres):
- Poorer grip on ice
- Quiet and good on wet roads and snow
Typical theory test questions
- When are studded tyres allowed in Northern Norway?
- What is the minimum tread depth for winter tyres?
- How much can braking distance increase on snow or ice?
- What’s the difference between studded and non-studded tyres?
- Can you get a fine for using summer tyres even if the studded tyre season hasn’t started?
👉 You’ll find these types of questions in our online theory tests – always with explanations to help you remember the rules.
Why are winter tyres important for road safety?
It’s not just about passing the theory test – winter tyres save lives. With the correct tyres, you get:
- Better grip in corners
- Shorter stopping distance
- More control in dangerous situations
Accident statistics show that many winter accidents could have been avoided with the right tyres and lower speed.
Summary – what you need to know for the theory test
- Use winter tyres when there are winter conditions, regardless of the date.
- Studded tyres are allowed from 1 November (16 October in Northern Norway).
- Minimum tread depth for winter tyres: 3 mm.
- Braking distance can be up to 10 times longer in winter.
- Know the difference between studded and non-studded winter tyres.
