Planning to practise driving this winter?

Øvelseskjøring på vinteren

Driving in winter can be both exciting and challenging. Darkness, snow, ice and cold weather demand more from you as a driver – and from the car you use. Many people preparing for the theory test forget how much winter conditions actually affect driving. Here’s a simple and useful guide to help you stay in control – both on the road and during your theory practice.

Driving in the dark – higher risk for pedestrians

When you practise driving in the dark, you must be extra alert. Pedestrians, cyclists and animals can be very hard to see, especially in rain, sleet, or when oncoming headlights dazzle you.

When you approach a pedestrian crossing, remember to:

  • Slow down early so you get a clear view.
  • Be prepared for glare from oncoming cars – pedestrians may appear suddenly.
  • Look carefully before you continue driving.

Tip for the theory test: You may get questions about how darkness affects visibility and reaction time. Remember: braking distance increases a lot when you can’t see well.

Another winter issue is that wet, dark asphalt absorbs light from your headlights. Because many roads are salted, there is often no snow to reflect the light, which makes visibility even poorer.

Road conditions – surfaces that can surprise you

When driving in winter, the road may be more slippery than it looks. Even “bare” asphalt can have a thin layer of ice that you won’t see until you lose grip. That’s why it’s important to understand terms like black ice and freezing rain, which also appear in the theory test.

Be especially aware of:

  • Freezing rain: Ice can form even when temperatures are just above 0°C.
  • Shiny asphalt: If it looks wet, it might actually be ice.

Tip for practice driving: Before entering main roads, gently test the brakes at low speed to feel how slippery it is. Check your mirrors first so you don’t surprise the car behind you.

Equipment – a winter-ready car is a safer car

A car in good technical condition is essential for safe winter driving. Learning how to look after your car also gives you useful technical knowledge that may appear on the theory test.

Check these 10 things before you set off:

Lights: Make sure all lights work – keep spare bulbs in the car.

Coolant: Check the level and the freezing point.

Brake fluid: Old fluid can freeze in very cold weather.

Tyres: Make sure your winter tyres have good tread – minimum 3 mm, preferably 5 mm.

Windscreen washer fluid: Use fluid that works down to at least –20°C.

Clear windows: Reduce moisture inside the car and keep air intakes clean.

Rubber seals and locks: Lubricate with silicone and lock oil.

Battery: Cold weather reduces capacity, so make sure it’s well charged.

Tyre pressure: Cold air reduces pressure, so check regularly.

Clean car: A clean car handles salt and moisture better – and gives you better visibility.

Tip: Many instructors recommend practising braking and steering on quiet car parks. This gives you valuable experience with how the car behaves on ice – which also helps you understand theory questions.
